Top Ten Tuesday: All Time Favourite Contemporary Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week's topic is "All Time Favourite Books of X Genre". I had a hard time choosing what genre to make a list of and finally settled to do the one genre I don't often mention — contemporary. It's not like I don't love contemporary books. It's just that I usually wander to the fantasy or sci-fi section of a bookstore than contemporary.

1. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

This book changed my life and the way I see this world. The affect people have on one another is massive and sometimes we don't even realise before it's too late. It's worth your time.

2. Paper Town by John Green

"What a treacherous thing to believe that a person is more than a person."

Many people compare this book to Looking For Alaska. I can see the similarities but I was not that fond of LFA when I was reading it. However, I like the theme and messages in Paper Town and I love Margo. I read it in two settings and the ending surprised me. I can promise you it is not cliche. 

3. Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols

I'm not crazy about contemporary romance but this one has magic of its own. I love the two main characters and this book is sexy. 

4. Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

"So many things become beautiful when you really look."

I didn't watch Groundhog Day before reading this book so the time-loop element is totally new to me. I was so into it. After finishing the book, I watched Groundhog Day and for a while I was quite obsessed with the theme of time-loop.

5. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

I avoided this book because of all the hypes. But then I happened to read the first few chapters in a bookstore and fell in love with both characters. This book is adorable! (Not very fond of Rainbow Rowell's writing though.)

6. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

I remember reading this book in one setting at night and finished it at around 5 a.m. because I just couldn't stop reading it. The mystery behind the pages is gripping even though I guessed it halfway through the book. It's still an amazing read.

7. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

"The marks humans leave are too often scars."

It always takes a bit of time to get into a John Green book but I got into this quickly. Hazel Grace is the best character John Green has ever created. To be honest, this book ruined me. It reminds me to live my life to its fullest and enjoy the little things.

8. Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder

I don't think this book is very popular but I wish it was! I picked it up in a book fair because I had never read a verse novel before and it was a delicious read for me. It is beautifully written.

9. A Match Made in High School by Kristin Walker 

"I guess what I’m trying to say is, you just can’t tell who you’re going to end up with. You might spend your whole life dreaming about one type of person, only to find happiness with somebody completely different. Someone you figured you had nothing in common with just might turn out to be your dream guy. And you know he’s your dream guy because you become a better person. He brings out all these great things in you that you never knew or believed were there. And if you’re really lucky you do the same for him. It makes it even more incredible that people find each other, considering most of them are looking in the wrong places to begin with."

This book is funny and meaningful. I kept imaging what would happen if this happened in my school when I was reading it. 

10. How to be Popular by Meg Cabot

Lastly, I have to put this on the list because it is the book that got me into reading.
