Wink Poppy Midnight is a mystery novel which surrounds the three main characters, Wink, Poppy, and Midnight. From the first page, I was hooked because of the author's writing. It is somehow poetic and it has the magical vibes in it. Since it is a mystery thriller, I will keep this review as simple as it can without spoiling anything.
The story is complicated and is told in 3 POVs. The only thing you know is that this boy called Midnight is tangled up with these two girls named Wink and Poppy. Starting right off, you're told that there's a hero, a villain and a secret, and it's obvious the author is asking the reader to guess who is who. I was 120 pages in and still had no idea where the story is going. It was the beautiful writing on each page and the mystery behind the two girls that kept me reading. Once the story picked up its pace, I was finishing it fast. It does have a few twists in it, and they all surprised me.
Out of all the characters in this book, my favourites are Poppy and Leaf. Poppy is the typical popular girl character, but there's depth in her. Leaf (you have to read the book to find out who he is), I like this character because he has a mind of his own. He is very unique. In fact, I will say that the characters in this book are very different from the books I usually read. Well, maybe Poppy does remind me of a character from a John Green novel (not going to say which one since it'll be quite a spoiler), but the rest are interesting.
Yet, I think the problem with this book is the pace of the first half is too slow. If it's not for the writing, I think I would have put it down and marked it as DNF already. Another problem, which is ironic, is that the ending seems rushed for me. After the revelation, a lot is described in the remaining short chapters. I would like to know more about them.
If you like mystery and fairytales, go grab this book. I will say that it is best to read it without knowing too much. Also, the cover is to die for!
